Types of Orthodontic Problems

If you’re wondering why people get orthodontic Treatment, you’re in the right place. See this list of orthodontic problems that can occur:

Underbite
An underbite means the lower jaw is extending out, causing lower front teeth to sit in front of upper front teeth.

Spacing
Spacing problems can be caused by missing or removed teeth, but they can also be a cosmetic or aesthetic issue.

Upper Front Teeth Protrusion
Both the appearance and function of teeth are impacted by this type of bite issue. It is characterized by the upper teeth extending too far forward or lower teeth not extending forward far enough.

Crowding
Crowding occurs when teeth don’t have enough room to erupt from the gums. Crowding is typically corrected by expansion. Through this treatment, tooth removal can be avoided.

Crossbite
When upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth, it’s called “crossbite.” This common problem can cause tooth stratification and misaligned jaw growth.

Overbite
When upper front teeth extend out over the lower front teeth, it is called “overbite.” Sometimes, overbite causes lower front teeth to bite into the roof of the mouth.

Open Bite
Proper chewing is affected by “open bite,” which happens when upper and lower front teeth do not overlap properly. Open Bite can result in a number of unwanted habits, such as tongue thrusting.

Dental Midlines not Matched
This type of problem is caused when the back bite does not fit and match appropriately, which impacts jaw growth and function.

How Long Does Orthodontic Treatment Take?

The amount of time needed for teen orthodontic treatment varies from patient to patient, but Dr. Prentice works with each patient and parent to establish a reasonable timeline of care using a full patient evaluation and treatment plan.

Maintaining your orthodonture work requires follow up appointments, but don’t worry. We will accommodate you and your teen’s busy schedule, work with you to set the treatment pace, and get them in and out of the chair as quickly as possible. Straight teeth won’t mean sacrificing their grade point average or their college fund!

Full Patient Evaluation and Treatment Plan

Dr. Prentice will only prescribe treatments that are absolutely necessary for your teen, and always gives teens a thorough examination before treatment.

This includes facial balance and potential TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorders. Dr. Prentice then provides a plan for treatment, complete with pricing and a timeline. We have many options for paying for braces, so don’t let the cost deter you from giving them the smile they want.

Orthodontics Retention

When braces come off, the work isn’t done. This phase is called “retention” and can take a minimum of 24 months to ensure the treatment is completed properly.

Wearing retainers and committing to a self-care routine will ensure treatment lasts because teeth can shift again over time. Dr. Prentice will check on the progress of your teeth and keep you informed.
