Retainers

Retention and Post-Treatment Care

Remember, the work isn’t over once your braces come off. At this point, you enter the retention stage of your treatment plan.

This phase takes a minimum of 24 months and involves wearing retainers and undertaking a consistent self-care routine to ensure the treatment lasts and teeth don’t shift back. During this time, Dr. Prentice pays close attention to your teeth to ensure everything stays in place.

Orthodontic Retainers Help Keep Alignment Over Time

Teeth can shift again over time. Removable and/or permanent retainers help ensure your smile stays as you intend it to. Retainers, combined with normal upkeep and routine maintenance, will keep your smile healthy and beautiful.

How Do Your Teeth Shift Over Time?

Many factors contribute to your teeth and jaw moving over time, including bad habits like chewing on pens or grinding your teeth when you sleep. Anything that can apply more pressure to certain areas of your mouth will cause shifting. It is critical to wear and maintain your retainers after treatment to prevent long-term health issues such as gastrointestinal problems, headaches, and ear pain.

When braces come off, the work isn’t done. This phase is called “retention” and can take a minimum of 24 months to ensure the treatment is completed properly. Wearing retainers and committing to a self-care routine will ensure treatment lasts because teeth can shift again over time. Dr. Prentice will check on the progress of your teeth and keep you informed.
